Once Upon a Time I Was a Mechanic

Andy Romanoff brings decades of experience and perspective to life in his new memoir, “Stories I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You.” In a video reading, Romanoff shares an excerpt on his time as a gas station attendant and mechanic in the 1950s and ’60s. The skills he learned doing hands-on engine and automotive maintenance and repair kept him afloat while he broke into the film industry and have stayed with him to this day.

“I was born with a mechanical bent,” says Romanoff. “From the time I was small, I taught myself to use tools, to take things apart and usually to fix them. First bicycles, then motorcycles, scooters and old cars – learning a bit here, a bit there until I understood fuel systems, ignitions, and all the rest of the things a car needs to work.”
